Fort Sumter is located between James Island and Sullivan's Island in the Charleston Harbor. Upon South Carolina secession from the Union, the Fort was commanded by Union Major Robert Anderson. South Carolina demanded that the US Government evacuate Charleston Harbor. On April 12, 1861, the Confederates opened fire and within 34 hours had basically destroyed the Fort. As one can see in the picture much of the destruction is evident. This area was the Officer Quarters.

ReplyDeleteNice view....we only saw the Fort from the other side of the bay....so it's a treat to peek at the inside. Hard to believe this was a scene of carnage 150 years ago!
