Bennett Place Replica (Southern Appomattox Courthouse)

This is the site (near Duke University) where Confederate General Johnston surrendered to Union General Sherman on April 26, 1865 (approximately halfway between Greensboro and Raleigh). They had met previously on April 17 at the site but could not come to any agreement as a result of Sherman informing Johnston of Lincoln's assassination on April 15th and also that Washington Officials had rejected the original surrender papers.
This was by far the largest group of soldiers (89,270) to surrender during the war.
